Do they really work??
So you’ve written a story! You love it! The concept is brilliant! The story line unique! The characters are believable!
So where do you or your readers stand on the length of manuscript?
Here’s an idea for those who love to read and want to know what happens and how it ends before they get to work or before they finish their lunch break. This is where short stories really fit in. If you travel by bus or train, you can lose yourself into a world of fantasy before you start that 8 hour shift of hell. If you have a lunch break and really don’t want to spend it talking to your colleagues, you can delve into a quickie before finishing that sandwich. In this time scale you could have possibly, had the best sex imaginable. Tracked down the most dangerous criminal on earth. Fought in a war that happened 300 years ago. Travelled to a new planet and met the alien love of your life. The list goes on.
The old traditional route of a paperback, 300 + pages long is the only way to read a well written book, has now become a myth in my opinion. E-books have opened the door to a brand new way of reading. I have read many wonderful stories that I would never have been able to read if it wasn’t for the accessibility of the internet. I have also befriended so many wonderful authors who, although most are not in my specified genre, have supported me as well as I have them. We have all written down our words, produced many babies for the world to criticise, and criticise they do. But along with the self opinions of our valued readers comes a sense of satisfaction. So back to the subject of short stories. I love to read them, sometimes I am thankful that it was a short and not a novel. It isn’t always necessary to write a feature-length to get the plot and the twists and to enable the character growth to take place. Many indie authors have been ridiculed for writing less than an hours read. This ridiculing has come from those who have a right to only want full length novels for their eyes to feast on. I am one of many who enjoy a good story, no matter how long it takes to read, or for it to have been written. If it is written well, it is a great story.
